Air Injection: Description and Operation

Managed Pulse Air (MPA) System:

The Managed Pulse Air (MPA) System is designed to help in the reduction of HC and CO emissions, by supplying additional oxygen into the exhaust system. This allows the hot exhaust gases to continue the combustion process of remaining unburned air/fuel charge, or to begin oxidizing HC and CO emissions. The ECA switches the pulse air upstream to the exhaust manifold during cold start and warm up operation, and switches the pulse air downstream to the catalytic converter during normal warm engine cruise operation. The system uses the natural pulses present in the exhaust to pull air in through the air cleaner, and utilizes check valves to prevent exhaust gas backup into the system.
