Disassembly/Assembly

Disassembly

1. Place half shaft assembly on a workbench.
2. Remove and discard snap rings retaining U-joint bearings in yoke.
3. Using a suitable tool, remove bearing from yoke. Discard bearing.
4. Mark stub shaft and slip yoke position to ensure that they are assembled in the same position.
5. Cut boot retaining clamps and remove and discard clamps.
6. Separate stub shaft from slip yoke.
7. Remove rubber boot. Inspect boot for rips or tears.

Assembly

1. Install rubber boot with smaller diameter facing splined stub shaft.
2. Install a new clamp.
3. Pull boot toward stub shaft and coat stub shaft splines with suitable grease.
4. Fill boot with approximately 10 grams of suitable lubricant.
5. Align ``blind splines'' on splined stub shaft to slip yoke. Push slip yoke onto stub shaft. Ensure both blind splines are matched.
6. Remove all excess grease from boot and slip yoke surfaces. Position boot over slip yoke boot groove.
7. Before installing the new large clamp, ensure that any air pressure which may have built up in the boot is relieved. Insert a dulled screwdriver between the boot and slip yoke and allow trapped air to escape from boot.
8. Start a new U-joint bearing into yoke.
9. Position spider in yoke and press bearing 1/4 inch below surface.
10. Remove tool and install a new snap ring.
11. Start a new bearing into side of yoke.
12. Install a suitable U-joint tool and press on bearing until opposite bearing contacts snap ring.
13. Remove tool and install a new snap ring.
