Carrier Bearings: Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION

NOTE: The differential endplay is set during manufacture and need not be checked or adjusted unless transaxle case, differential case, differential ball bearings, or differential bearing retainer is replaced.

CAUTION: Prior to installing differential into case, remove burrs on transaxle mounting surface to ensure accurate feeler gauge reading during endplay measurement.

Installing Shim Spacer Tool:

1. Install differential assembly and place shim spacer tool No. T83P-4451-BH or equivalent on differential ball bearing outer race. Ensure shim spacer tool thickness is 0.054-0.055 inch.
2. Remove differential bearing retainer oil seal and gasket, then install bearing retainer.

Installing Shim Selector Tool:

3. Install shim selector tool No. T81P-4551-A or equivalent in the differential bearing retainer. Ensure tool is centered in the differential seal bore.

Checking Differential Bearing Endplay:

4. Position gauge bar tool No. T80L-77003-A or equivalent across differential bearing retainer and install two attaching bolts finger tight.
5. Finger tighten center screw on gauge bar, then rotate the differential assembly several times and check tightness of screw. Rotation of the differential ensures proper seating of the bearings.
6. Using a feeler gauge, measure gap between bearing and case at three positions, then take the average.
7. To determine the shim needed, subtract the average reading and the compressed gasket thickness of 0.011 inch from 0.053 inch (which is a constant based on shim spacer tool T83P-4451-BH or its equivalent).
