LEAKS - OIL - 2.3L HSC - OIL PAN FRONT COVER GASKET

FORD: 1989-92 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989-92 TOPAZ

ISSUE: The oil pan front cover gasket may leak oil. This occurs because it was not sealed properly.

ACTION: If an oil pan front cover oil leak is observed, use the following repair procedure.

1. Air test the engine to distinguish between oil pan gasket and front cover leaks.

2. If the front cover gasket is leaking, replace it with a new gasket (F13Z-6020-A) and use gasket maker (E2AZ-19562-B) on the cover bolts prior to tightening to 6-9 lb.ft. (8-12 N-m).

3. If the oil pan is leaking, use gasket maker (E2AZ-19562-B) on the the bottom two (2) cover bolts. Tighten all cover bolts to 6-9 lb.ft. (8-12 N-m) to prevent a leak in the future.

4. For either front cover or oil pan leaks, use RTV sealant (F1AZ-19562-A).

a. Be sure to check RTV sealant expiration date.

b. Assemble within 5 minutes, but wait for 1 hour before filling the engine with oil.

NOTE: REFER TO TSB 91-13-7 FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT PROPER USE OF RTV FOR PROPER SEALING AND TSB 91-23-6 FOR PROPER REPAIR PROCEDURE AND LABOR STANDARDS.
