Fig. 14 Removing Or Installing Shift Linkage Grommet In Limited Space Situations:
The automatic transmission linkage system incorporates a polyurethane plastic grommet to connect the various rods, levers and adjusting stud. Whenever a rod is disconnected from a grommet type connector, the old grommet must be removed and a new one installed.
1. Place lower jaw of shift linkage insulator tool No. T67P-7341-A, or equivalent, between lever and rod, Fig. 13. For limited work space applications, use grommet tool No. T84P-7341-A or equivalent, Fig. 14.
2. Position stop pin against end of control rod and force rod out of grommet.
3. Remove grommet from lever by cutting off large shoulder with sharp knife.
4. Adjust stop pin to 1/2 inch and coat outside of grommet with suitable lubricant.
5. Place a new grommet on the stop pin and force it into the lever hole, then turn grommet several times to ensure it is properly seated.
6. Readjust stop pin to proper height, Fig. 13, coating ends of rods with suitable lubricant.
7. With pin height properly adjusted, position rod on tool and force rod into grommet until groove in rod seats on inner retaining lip of grommet. Use grommet tool No. T84P-7341-B for limited work space applications, Fig. 14.
