FORD: 1991 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 COUGAR
ISSUE: A false "Low Fuel" warning may occur intermittently at about 1/2 fuel level. This is caused by an incorrect wire connection to the VMM (Vehicle Maintenance Monitor) only on vehicles equipped with the "Sport Cluster" option.
ACTION: Modify the EIC (Electronic Instrument Cluster) sense ground circuit # 57 as indicated in the following service procedure.
NOTE: THIS CONCERN WILL NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE MAINTENANCE MONITOR. THE VMM WILL RESUME NORMAL OPERATION AFTER THE CONCERN IS CORRECTED.
1. Remove the VMM from the vehicle. Refer to the 1991 Thunderbird/Cougar Shop Manual, Section 33-38, for removal procedure.
2. Remove the EIC Sense Ground Circuit # 57 (BLK) from PIN # 6 of the VMM connector.
3. Tape the EIC Sense wire to the wiring harness.
4. Connect and install the VMM in the instrument panel.
