TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

Refer to the illustration.

INSPECTION

Raise the car on a hoist and check the transmission build date code on the identification tag. Repair only those transmissions with build date codes of October 23, 1990 (K23) and October 24, 1990 (K24). Cars with transmission build dates other than K23 and K24 may be released.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Disconnect the cable from the transmission TV lever ball stud.

2. Carefully disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever at the transmission by removing the adjusting nut.

3. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan. Loosen the pan attaching bolts and drain the fluid from the transmission.

4. When the fluid has drained from the transmission, remove and thoroughly clean the pan. Discard the pan gasket.

5. Remove transmission oil filter (retain filter gasket for reinstallation).

6. Remove the manual lever detent spring and roller assembly.

7. Observe location of the various levers and torsion spring.

8. Grasp the outer throttle lever firmly and loosen the lever attaching nut. Then, remove the attaching nut, lockwasher and throttle lever.

9. Remove the manual lever retaining pin using needle nose pliers or diagonal cutters - this must be done with care.

10. Remove TV lever torsion spring.

11. Remove manual lever attaching nut and outer manual lever. Discard the lever.

12. Remove inner throttle lever.

13. Remove the inner manual lever and parking pawl actuating rod as an assembly.

14. Disconnect the park pawl actuating rod from the inner manual lever. Mutilate and scrap the old parking pawl actuating rod assembly.

ASSEMBLY

1. Install a new park actuating rod assembly from the kit in the inner manual lever. Reinstall the park rod assembly and inner manual lever in the transmission.

2. Install inner throttle lever and TV lever torsion spring.

3. From the kit, select the outer manual lever assembly required for the car. Then, slide the lever into the case. Install the attaching nut. Torque the nut to 19-27 ft.lbs. (26-37 N-m).

4. Install the new manual lever retaining pin.

5. Install the outer throttle lever, lockwasher and retaining nut. Torque the retaining nut to 12-16 ft.lbs. (16-22 N-m).

6. Install detent spring and roller assembly. Torque the bolt to 80-120 in.lbs. (9-14 N-m).

7. Install the oil filter. Torque the bolts to 80-120 in.lbs. (9-14 N-m).

8. Check park function and proper operation of TV lever and manual lever before further assembly.

9. Install the oil pan, using a new pan gasket. Torque the bolts to 6-10 ft.lbs. (8-13.5 N-m).

10. Attach the shift cable.

11. Attach the TV cable.

12. Lower car and fill the transmission to the correct level with the specified fluid.

13. Reset the TV linkage per shop manual instructions. (Refer to Section 17-20 Adjustments, Throttle Valve (TV) Control Cable System).

14. Start car in park and with foot on brake, cycle gear selector several times. Recheck transmission fluid level and adjust as needed. Check for leaks.

15. Confirm proper operation of the parking pawl mechanism by performing the following procedure:

A. Place the car on an upgrade (car facing uphill) and fully engage the selector in park making certain the park position has held.

B. Move the car a few feet and repeat step A at least five or six more times. Moving the car each time will ensure that a different park tooth has been engaged.

C. Place the car on a downgrade (car facing downhill) and repeat steps A and B to fully verify park function.
