Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Transmission Shifter/Linkage Assembly:






1. Remove the console.
2. Remove the lower LH instrument panel trim and the steering column lower shroud.
3. Remove the interlock cable retaining screw and disconnect the cable from the shift lever cam.
4. Remove the steering column retaining nuts and lower the column to the floor. Disconnect the electrical connector at the interlock solenoid.
5. Remove the cable retaining screw from the steering column.
6. Guide the interlock cable out from under the carpeting.

INSTALLATION
1. Guide the interlock cable under the carpeting and attach the cable retaining screw to the steering column.
2. Connect the electrical connector to the interlock solenoid.
3. Raise the steering column from the floor and attach the retaining nuts. Tighten the retaining nuts to 20-33 Nm (15-24 ft lb).
4. Install the interlock cable to the shift lever cam and tighten it to 2.8-4.0 Nm (2-3 ft lb). Install the cable retaining screw at the steering column and tighten it to 1.1-1.5 Nm (10-13 in lb).
5. Install the steering column lower shroud and install the lower LH instrument panel trim.
6. Install the console.
7. Test the shift interlock system for proper operation. The ignition key should only be removable with the shift lever in PARK. The shifter should be locked in PARK with the key removed. This shifter should be locked in the PARK position with the key in the ON position and should release when the service brakes are applied.
