Passive Restraint System (Motorized Seat Belts)

The Passive Restraint System, which operates electrically, restrains the driver and front seat passenger in the vehicle through the use of the automatic shoulder belt, the manual lap belt, and knee bolsters.

THE LAP SAFETY BELT IS TO BE MANUALLY BUCKLED BY THE DRIVER/PASSENGER AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE WORN WITH THE SHOULDER BELT. BE SURE THE LAP BELT IS ON YOUR HIPS AS LOW AS POSSIBLE.

After entering the vehicle and closing the door, check to ensure the shoulder belt is latched to the emergency release buckle at the A-pillar.

If it is not latched, pull the shoulder belt from the retractor between the seat and console, and buckle it to the emergency release buckle. Insert the key into the ignition and turn the key to the ON position. A motor will cause the shoulder belt to slide along its track starting at the front body A-pillar and moving rearward to its locked position in the center body B-pillar.

NOTE: The shoulder belt will not move rearward if door is not fully closed.

The safety belt warning indicator in the instrument cluster will illuminate four to eight seconds. In the unlikely event the shoulder belt should stall before it reaches the B-pillar, the indicator will remain illuminated and the chime will sound after 14 seconds until the shoulder belt is in its locked position at the B-pillar.

NOTE: There is a delay of approximately 14 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, if driver's lap belt is latched or a 6 second delay after the lap belt warning chime stops, if the driver's lap belt is not latched and shoulder belt stalls before locking at the B-pillar.

If only the indicator remains illuminated, check to ensure both shoulder belts are latched to the emergency release buckle. If they are latched, and the indicator lamp and chime remain on, perform Manual Override System procedure before driving the vehicle.

The shoulder belt will automatically adjust itself to allow for comfort and freedom of movement by the occupant. It will lock tight only on extremely hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more.

When the ignition is in any position and the door is opened, the shoulder belt will move forward to the A-pillar. This will allow ample room to enter and exit the vehicle.

WARNING: USE THE SHOULDER BELT ON THE OUTSIDE SHOULDER ONLY. NEVER WEAR THE SHOULDER BELT UNDER THE ARM. NEVER SWING IT AROUND YOUR NECK OVER THE INSIDE SHOULDER. NEVER USE A SINGLE BELT FOR MORE THAN ONE PERSON. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE PRECAUTIONS COULD INCREASE THE CHANCE AND/OR SEVERITY OF INJURY IN AN ACCIDENT.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE the belt as an assist handle when entering or exiting the vehicle. The door should not be opened while the vehicle is in motion.

CIRCUIT PROTECTION
The vehicle passive restraint system is protected with a 20 gauge fuse link (Dk Blue). The fuse link is located on the RH side of the vehicle near the starter motor relay.
