ISSUE:
Stumbles or stalls, with or without restart, may occur when the Thick Film Ignition (TFI) module gets wet. These symptoms may disappear when the TFI module housing and internal terminals have dried out. This condition is most likely to occur in winter where salt contamination between the Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) and Spark Output signals (SPOUT) terminals occurs. This causes the circuit resistance to be reduced which affects the signal voltages. This condition may result in service codes 211 and/or 212.

ACTION:
Install a new TFI module which has been improved to prevent salt and water entry. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


NOTE:
THIS CONDITION DOES NOT AFFECT THE PIP SENSOR (STATOR) OR THE EEC IV PROCESSOR.

1. Inspect the part number on the TFI module.

^ If it is F1SF-12A297-C1A, inspect the date code which can be found under the part number (example date code: 1H17A).

^ If the first number of the code is a 0 or if the first number of the code is a 1 followed by a letter A through J, then replacement of the TFI module is required.

2. Install a new TFI module (F1PZ-12A297-A) with improvements to prevent salt and water entry. Refer to the 1991 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual, Page 23-03-6, for removal and installation.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
