^ GLASS - DOOR - WINDOW OPERATING MECHANISM - BINDING AND NOISY

^ NOISE - "GRINDING AND CREAKING" SOUNDS FROM DOOR WINDOW MECHANISM

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI

ISSUE: The door window operating mechanisms may bind and not operate properly. In addition, the power operated window regulator assemblies may make a grinding/creaking noise. This usually occurs because of excessive friction loading on the window glass.

ACTION: If service is required, inspect the window operating mechanisms and, if required, make the adjustments or repairs as outlined in the following service procedure.

INITIAL INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS

^ If the power operated windows do not operate, conduct the diagnosis and testing procedure as described in the 1991 Capri Shop Manual, Section 42-08. Repair and/or replace components as required.

^ If the power operated window regulator assemblies make a grinding or creaking noise, make sure that the window glass is free to move in the glass run channel before replacing the regulator assemblies.

WINDOW OPERATION WITH DOOR OPEN

1. Remove the door trim panels and adjust the window channels to achieve a smooth operation of the window. Refer to TSB Article 90-25-7 for service details. If it is not possible to achieve the required results, proceed to Step # 2.

2. Remove the window glass guide and rear glass channel. Refer to the 1991 Capri Shop Manual, Section 42-08, for the removal procedure.

Figure 1:

NOTE: THERE ARE THREE LEVELS OF GLASS GUIDE AND REAR GLASS RUN CHANNEL COMBINATIONS USED IN PRODUCTION. REFER TO FIGURE 1 TO IDENTIFY THE VEHICLE LEVEL.

a. If the vehicle has an early level glass guide and rear glass run channel, replace both components with the latest level components available.

b. If the glass guide and rear glass run channel are a later design level, modify the components as follows:

Figure 2:

^ Remove the rear glass run channel from the vehicle. Remove the lips from the weatherstrip and reinstall, Figure 2.

Figure 3:

^ Inspect the rear glass guide. Remove any moulding "flash" and/or rough surfaces from the guide contact faces using P600 wet and dry paper, Figure 3.

c. Install the glass guide to the rear glass run channel and slide it up and down to ensure free movement. If there is excessive drag or tight spots, confirm that the weatherstrip is properly installed.

d. If necessary, reduce the glass guide thickness up to 0.4 mm to achieve a free sliding movement, Figure 3.

3. Inspect the door vertical division bar if the window glass will not fully raise. The end cap at the top of the division bar may be closed over, preventing the glass from raising. Proceed as follows:

a. Lower the door glass.

Figure 4:

b. Pull the weatherstrip aside at the top of the division bar.

c. Apply a coating of Weatherstrip & Rubber Adhesive (E8AZ-19552-A) to both sides after inserting the adhesive tube nozzle between the division bar and weatherstrip, Figure 4.

d. Insert a wedge into the weatherstrip to ensure it is spread fully into the division bar channel.

e. Remove the wedge after the adhesive has cured. Raise the door glass.

WINDOW OPERATION WITH DOOR CLOSED

1. Check the LH door glass for excessive curvature at the rear edge.

Figure 5:

a. Position 2 nuts from the retaining hardware on the door glass as shown in Figure 5.

b. Place a straight edge on top of the 2 nuts.

c. Measure the distance between the straight edge and the door glass upper surface.

^ The distance should be 8 mm +/- 1 mm.

^ If the distance is greater than 9 mm, replace the door glass.

d. Install the door glass retaining hardware to the door glass.

e. Reassemble the door glass assembly to the door.

Figure 6:

2. If the window glass winds up slowly with the door closed and faster with the door open, install 3.0 mm thick shims between the soft top frame to body mounting points, Figure 6.

NOTE: THIS ACTION REDUCES THE FRAME WIDTH OF THE CONVERTIBLE TOP, PREVENTING EXCESSIVE LOADING FROM BEING APPLIED TO THE WINDOW GLASS.

3. If the convertible top roof side rail weatherstrips prevent the window glass from raising fully, replace the weatherstrips with the latest level components available.

4. If the window regulator performance has not improved after the previous checks have been performed, replace the window regulator.
