^ TRANSAXLE - 4EAT - SOFT OR HARSH SHIFTS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI
ISSUE: Harsh or soft shifts and delayed shift with neutral between shifts may occur. These conditions can be caused by a misadjusted throttle valve cable.
Figure 1:
ACTION: Adjust the throttle valve cable. Refer to the following adjustment procedure for service details.
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
1. Pull out the dipstick and be sure that the transaxle lever is between the LOW and FULL marks. Use the low temperature scale when the fluid temperature is 68~F (20~C). Use the high temperature scale when the fluid temperature is 149~F (65~C). If necessary, add Motorcraft MERCON transaxle fluid or equivalent.
2. Remove the splash shield next to the left front tire.
Figure 2:
3. Remove the square head plug (marked "L") and installed Transmission Test Adapter D87C-77000-A or equivalent and Pressure Gauge T57L-77820-A. Refer to figure 2.
Figure 3:
4. Turn the kickdown cable locknuts to the furthest point from the throttle cam (loosen the cable all the way). Refer to figure 3.
5. Shift the transaxle into PARK and warm up the engine.
NOTE: THE IDLE SPEED SHOULD BE AT 850 RPM.
6. Turn the locknuts toward the throttle cam until the line pressure begins to exceed 412kPa (60 psi).
7. Turn the locknuts away from the throttle cam until a line pressure of 372-412 kPa (54-60psi) is reached.
8. Tighten the locknuts.
9. Turn off the engine.
10. Install the square head plug and tighten to 43-87 lb.in. (5-10 N-m).
