Idler Gear: Service and Repair

DISASSEMBLE

Exploded View Of Idler Gear:






1. Disassemble idle gear as shown in the Exploded View Of Idler Gear image.
2. Secure idle shaft in vise using torque adapter tool No. T87C-77000-E or equivalent, then remove locknut.

CAUTION: Use protective plates to prevent damage to adapter.

3. Remove bearing outer race from idle gear, using bearing remover D80L-630-11 or equivalent.
4. Inspect all components for excessive wear or damage and replace as necessary.

ASSEMBLE
1. Reverse procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. Secure idle shaft in vise, then torque locknut to 94-130 ft lbs.
b. Measure bearing preload using spring scale or torque wrench. Preload should be 0.26-7.8 lbs.
c. If preload in not as specified, torque locknut while checking preload to 94-130 ft lbs.

d. On all other models, if preload cannot be obtained within specified torque range, select appropriate adjustment shims from the Idler Gear Pressure Plate Thickness Chart. No more than seven shims should be used to obtain correct preload. Preload can be reduced by increasing thickness of shims.
