DISASSEMBLEExploded View Of Clutch Assembly:
NOTE: Refer to the Exploded View Of Clutch Assembly image when disassembling the clutch assembly.
1. Compress spring and retainer assembly, using tool No. T65L-77515-A or equivalent. Remove snap ring from spring and retainer assembly, then remove coasting clutch from reverse and forward drum by applying compressed air through fluid passage.
2. Remove coasting piston from coasting clutch drum using compressed air through fluid passage.
3. Compress piston return spring, then remove one end of snap ring from groove with suitable pliers.
4. Remove snap ring and place reverse and forward drum on oil pump.
5. Remove reverse piston by applying compressed air through fluid passage.
6. Inspect drive and driven plates for damage or wear. Minimum thickness is 0.055 inch.
7. Inspect clutch piston for damage or cracks.
8. Check clutch drum for damage or deformation.
9. Check seal contact areas from damage.
10. Ensure check ball is not leaking or sticking.
11. Check spring and retainer assembly for separation.
12. Check return spring free length. Free length should be 1.173 inch.
ASSEMBLY
1. Apply small amount of automatic transmission fluid to inner and outer faces of seal before installing reverse seal on piston. Face outer seal lip toward the inside by gently rolling it down around the circumference for easier installation.
2. Install coasting clutch drum in correct position in the reverse and forward drum.
3. Install coasting piston by pushing evenly around the circumference.
CAUTION: Ensure not to damage outer seal.
4. Install spring and retainer assembly, then compress spring and retainer using suitable tool No. T65I-77515 or equivalent.
5. Install snap ring then the dished plate with dished side upward.
6. Install drive, driven plates, retaining plate, and snap ring.
Casting Clutch Pressure Plate Thickness Chart:
7. Measure clearance of snap ring and retaining plate. Clearance should be 0.040-0.047 inch. If clearance is not as specified, select a retaining plate which will bring clearance to specification, as shown in the Casting Clutch Pressure Plate Thickness Chart.
