Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Apply the parking brake and make sure that the vehicle is in the NEUTRAL (M/T) or PARK (A/T) range.
2. START the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
3. Turn OFF all electrical loads and accessories.
4. Connect a timing light.

Timing Adjustment Procedure:






5. Disconnect and plug the vacuum hoses from the distributor vacuum control diaphragm.

Self Test Input Connector:






6. Using a jumper wire, connect the green 1-pin STI self test connector.
7. Using a tachometer, check the idle speed and adjust, if necessary.


Timing Mark Reference:






8. Using the timing light, verify the ignition timing is within:

Non-Turbo 2° +/- 1°

Turbo 12° +/- 1°

9. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor mounting bolts and turn the distributor until timing is set.
10. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts.
11. Remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic connector.
12. Remove the timing light.
13. Remove the tachometer.
