Luggage Compartment Lamp - Will Not Shut Off

ISSUE: The luggage compartment courtesy lamp (may not shut off when the decklid is closed. This occurs because the lamp switch wire is grounded, trapped or damaged, between the left hand side tail lamp retaining nut and the body panel. This condition also causes the battery to eventually discharge resulting in a no start condition.

ACTION: Inspect the luggage compartment courtesy lamp wiring and, if required, repair it. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


INSPECTION

1. Make sure the battery is sufficiently charged to operate the courtesy lamps. If necessary, recharge the battery.

2. Open the deck lid and lower the center trim panel. Close the deck lid.

3. Make sure a 10 amp courtesy lamp fuse is installed in the fuse panel.

4. See if the courtesy lamp is illuminated.

a. Lower the rear seat back.

b. Look into the luggage compartment.

c. If the courtesy lamp is on, proceed with the repair procedure.

d. If the courtesy lamp is not on, continue with Step 4e.

e. Raise the seat back.
f. Reposition the luggage compartment center trim panel.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Raise the deck lid.

2. Remove the upper back trim panel. Refer to the 1991 Capri Shop Manual, Section 45-03, for service details.

3. Using a shop light, inspect the courtesy lamp switch wiring to see where it is trapped, Figure 1.

4. Loosen the tail lamp retaining nut and free the trapped wiring.

5. Re-tighten the retaining nut.

6. Remove the deck lid latch retaining screws and remove the latch from the body panel.

7. Disconnect the courtesy lamp switch wire from the latch.

8. Reposition the courtesy lamp switch lamp wire.

a. Tie a piece of string 36" (900 mm long) to the wire connector.

b. Pull the wire toward the left side of the body enough to clear the upper back panel.

c. Leave the string in the upper back panel to assist in reassembly.

9. Inspect the damaged section of the wire.

^ If only the wiring insulation is damaged, apply electrical insulation tape to make the repair. Proceed to Step # 11.

^ If any strands of the wire are broken, proceed to Step # 10.

10. Repair the damaged wire as follows:

a. Remove the damaged portion of the wire.

b. Splice the wire using solder and a "duraseal" butt splice connector. Refer to TSB 86-3-11 for service details.

c. Apply electrical tape.

d. Pull the protective sleeving over the repaired area.

e. Apply electrical tape over the joint.

11. Using the string attached in Step 8a, pull the switch wire into the upper back panel. Be sure that it lays in the bottom of the channel.

12. Disconnect the string from the switch wire.

13. Reconnect the switch wire to the latch.

14. Re-install the latch to the upper back panel.

NOTE: MAKE SURE THE DECK LID LATCH OPERATING ROD IS CONNECTED TO THE LATCH BEFORE INSTALLING THE LATCH TO THE BODY.

15. Close the deck lid. Make sure the courtesy lamp is not illuminated.

16. Re-install the luggage compartment trim.

a. Open the deck lid.

b. Re-install the upper back panel trim and retainers.

c. Reposition the luggage compartment center trim panel.

d. Close the deck lid.

e. Raise the rear seat back.

f. Make sure the rear seat belts are correctly positioned.
