AIR CONDITIONING - ERRATIC A/C COMPRESSOR CYCLING
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI
ISSUE: The air conditioner compressor clutch may cycle at a rapid frequency because of an excessive voltage drop in the air conditioning switching circuit.
ACTION: Inspect the A/C system for correct refrigerant charge and, if necessary, replace the A/C control switch. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Inspect the A/C system for correct refrigerant charge. Refer to the 1991 Capri Shop Manual, Page 36-32-9, for pressure specifications.
2. If the A/C system requires a recharge, the correct amount is 700-750g (1.55-1.66 lbs.) of Refrigerant-12 after evacuation. Refer to the 1991 Capri Shop Manual, Page 36-32-19, system charging information.
3. Recheck air conditioner compressor operation. If erratic cycling still exists, install a new A/C control switch (F0JY-19986-B).
a. Remove the instrument cluster bezel. Refer to the 1991 Capri Shop Manual, Page 45-61-2, for removal procedure.
b. Disconnect the A/C switch wiring connector from the switch. If a short jumper loom was installed between the A/C switch and the main wiring loom connector, remove it and throw it away.
c. Remove the existing A/C switch and install a new A/C control switch (F0JY-19986-B).
d. Reconnect the A/C switch wiring connector.
e. Reinstall the instrument cluster bezel.
