^ NOISE - "CLUNKS", "KNOCKS" AND "RATTLES" - LOOSE SUSPENSION OR MOTOR MOUNT ATTACHING HARDWARE

Article No. 91-4-7

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI

ISSUE: A "clunking", "knocking" or "rattling" noise may come from under the hood or the underbody area. This usually occurs because of loose suspension or motor mount attaching hardware.

ACTION: Check the suspension components and motor mount attaching hardware for proper torque. If loose, tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

U-CLAMP BOLTS

Figure 1:

1. Inspect the U-clamps on the lower control arms for the presence of any underbody sealer or tape between the U-clamps and the mounting surface to the underbody, Figure 1.

2. If sealer or tape is present, remove the two bolts holding the clamp and remove the sealer or tape from the area.

3. Re-install the bolts and tighten to 44-54 lb.ft. (59-74 N-m).

LOWER CONTROL ARM FRONT PIVOT BOLT

1. Attempt to tighten the lower control arm front pivot bolt to 55-60 lb.ft. (80 N-m), Figure 1.

2. If any movement is noticed, proceed as follows:

a. Remove the bolt.

b. Clean the threads with a wire brush.

c. Apply Threadlock and Sealer (EOAZ-19554-AA).

d. Re-install the bolt and tighten to 69-86 lb.ft. (93-117 N-m).

ENGINE SUPPORT BOLT TOROUES

Figure 2:

1. Inspect the engine support for the presence of underbody sealer or tape between the engine support and the mounting surface to the underbody, Figure 2.

2. If sealer or tape is present, remove the bolts holding the engine support to the underbody.

3. Remove the sealer or tape from this area.

4. Re-install the bolts and tighten to 47-66 lb.ft. (64-89 N-m).
