^ ENGINE - 1.6L - HYDRAULIC TAPPET "RATTLING" NOISE

^ NOISE - "RATTLING" FROM HYDRAULIC TAPPETS DURING START-UP - 1.6L

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI

ISSUE: A "rattling" noise from the hydraulic tappets may occur during engine start-up. In hot weather and after a hot soak it may persist for 10-20 seconds and be quite loud. The rattle does not harm the engine or affects its function.

ACTION: Usually no action is required because this noise is considered normal for this type of engine.

Hydraulic lash adjuster noise may occur because...

^ Air is entrapped in the high pressure chamber of the adjuster. This rattle may persist for a long time and will usually be confined to one or two adjusters.

^ There have been repeated unsuccessful attempts to start the engine. If this type of rattle occurs it is difficult to purge the air from the system.

It is not necessary to replace the adjusters until the following procedure has been performed.

1. Bring the engine to normal operating temperature.

2. Run the engine at 2000 RPM for at least 10 minutes.

3. If this action fails to eliminate the rattle, then the adjusters may have to be replaced.
