CONVERTIBLE TOP - TEARS AT TOP OF "B" PILLAR


LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI


The TSB Article is being republished in its entirety to correct the part number for fir tree clip.

Figure 1:

ISSUE: The convertible top fabric may catch behind the shingle weatherstrip when raising the top, causing a tear at the top of the "B" pillar, Figure 1.

ACTION: Install a rip stop shield. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Figure 2:

1. Lower the convertible top and support it at a comfortable working level, Figure 2.

2. Inspect the "B" pillar upper corner to see if a small plastic cap is rivetted to the top of the "B" pillar. If so, remove it as follows:

a. Drill out the pop rivet.

b. Remove all drilling particles.

c. Remove the cap and discard.

3. Position the rip stop shield (FOJY-76537A32/3-A) into the # 3 roof bow.

NOTE: THE HOLE IN THE SHIELD LEG LOCATES OVER THE POP RIVET IN THE WINDSHIELD HEADER BOW.

4. Place the shield against the "B" pillar and locate it in position using a pop rivet (V840098-S36C), Figure 1.

NOTE: DO NOT PULL RIVET AT THIS TIME.


5. Install a fir tree clip (FOJY-7620604-A) into the windshield header bow and press fully into place.

6. Complete pop rivet installation.

7. Repeat the operation for the opposite side of the vehicle.

8. Raise the convertible top and secure it in place.

NOTE: IF THE TOP IS TORN, REPLACE THE TOP MATERIAL.
