RADIO - FRONT SPEAKER - "BUZZES" WHEN THE RADIO/CASSETTE IS OPERATED AT MODERATE VOLUME AND SET WITH HIGH TREBLE OR LOW BASE
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 CAPRI
ISSUE: The front speaker(s) may make a "Buzzing" sound when the radio/cassette is operated at moderate volume and set with high treble or low base. This occurs because the speaker wiring is damaged or moisture has entered the speaker mounting area.
ACTION: Check the speaker and cone wiring for damage. If necessary, replace the speaker. Also, be sure that the watershield is properly sealed. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Remove the door trim panel from the door with the speaker buzz. Refer to the 1991 Capri Service Manual, Page 45-03-01, for the removal procedure.
2. Remove the three (3) speaker attaching screws and temporarily remove the speaker.
3. With the speaker in hand, operate the radio to confirm that the speaker buzz still exists.
^ If the buzz does exist with the speaker in hand, replace the speaker (E9JY-18808-A).
^ If the condition does not exist, then continue with Step 4.
4. Disconnect the speaker wiring and remove the speaker.
5. Remove the door handle reinforcement bracket, if necessary, and carefully peel back the watershield.

6. Place a foam pad (F0JY-7620700-A) over the window regulator wiring harness, Figure 1. Locate it on the wiring harness as it runs over the sheet metal; not on the connector.

7. Apply sealant (E8AZ-19552-A) onto the watershield between the door panel and watershield in the areas shown in Figure 2.
a. Bond the watershield onto the door using firm pressure.
b. Ensure that a continuous waterproof seal is again formed around the watershield outer perimeter.
NOTE: IF THE WATERSHIELD IS DAMAGED OR TORN, REPLACE IT (E9JY-76237AO4/5-A).

11. Reinstall the speaker using new screws (E610268-S74), Figure 6. Be careful not to damage the speaker cone wires when installing it.
12. Reinstall the door handle reinforcement if removed earlier and the door trim panel. Refer to the 1991 Capri Service Manual , Page 45-03-4, for installation procedure.
