Disassembly/Assembly
1. Mark front and rear driveshaft position for assembly.2. Remove bearing retaining cap bolts and remove bearing caps. Separate front and rear half or driveshafts.
3. Mount driveshaft assembly in a suitable vise.
4. Remove driveshaft yoke attaching nut.
5. Using a suitable tool, remove driveshaft.
6. Mount driveshaft into a suitable press with yoke nut installed flush with end of shaft.
7. Check center support bearing for wear or rough action by rotating the inner race while holding outer race. If any wear or roughness is evident, replace the bearing.
8. Install center support bearing. Support driveshaft under slinger mounting flange.
9. Mark stub shaft and slip yoke position to ensure that they are assembled in same position.
10. Remove and discard snap rings retaining U-joint bearings in yoke.
11. Using tool No. T74P-4635-C or equivalent, remove bearing yoke. If bearing cannot be completely removed from yoke with tool, remove it using suitable pliers. Discard bearing after removal.
12. Cut boot retaining clamps using side cutters. Remove and discard clamps.
13. Separate stub shaft from slip yoke.
14. Remove rubber boot. Inspect boot for rips or tears, replace if required. Check grease for contamination. If driveshaft was operating satisfactory and grease does not appear to be contaminated, add grease as described and replace the boot. If grease appears contaminated, inspect stub shaft and yoke for wear.
15. Install rubber boot over splined stub shaft.
16. Install a new clamp.
17. Pull boot toward stub shaft and coat stub shaft splines with suitable lubricant.
18. Fill boot with approximately 10 grams of suitable lubricant.
19. Align ``blind splines'' on splined stub shaft to slip yoke. Push slip yoke onto stub shaft, ensuring splines are aligned properly.
20. Remove all excess grease from boot and slip yoke surfaces. Position boot over slip yoke boot groove.
21. Before installing a clamp over slip yoke, ensure that any air pressure which may have built up in the boot is relieved. Insert a dulled screwdriver between the boot and slip yoke, then allow trapped air to escape from boot.
22. Start a new U-joint bearing into yoke.
23. Position spider in yoke and press bearing 1/4 inch below surface using U-joint tool.
24. Remove tool and install a new snap ring.
25. Start a new bearing into opposite side of yoke.
26. Install a suitable U-joint tool, and press bearing until opposite bearing contacts snap ring.
27. Remove tool and install a new snap ring.
28. Mount driveshaft assembly into a suitable vise. Install yoke and retaining nut. Torque nut to 100-120 ft. lbs.
29. Remove driveshaft from vise.
30. Position front driveshaft assembly to rear yoke assembly. Ensure to match alignment marks during disassembly. Install bearing retaining caps and bolts. Torque bolts to 15-17 ft. lbs.
