INNER JOINT

Wire Ring Ball Retainer Type

1. Remove large clamp, then slide boot back and wipe excess grease, Fig. 16. Inspect CV joint grease for contamination by rubbing a small amount between two fingers. Any gritty feeling indicates contamination. If grease is contaminated, proceed with disassembly. If grease is not contaminated and joint was operating satisfactorily, add grease and replace boot.
2. Using a suitable tool, remove wire ring ball retainer from race.
3. Remove outer race.
4. Pull inner race and bearing assembly out until race contacts snap ring.
5. Using suitable pliers, spread then slide snap ring back onto shaft.
6. Slide inner race and bearing assembly down the shaft to allow access to the snap ring.
7. Using a suitable screwdriver, remove snap ring.
8. Remove inner race and bearing assembly.

9. Remove bearings from cage by prying with a dulled screwdriver. Use caution not to damage or scratch any components, Fig. 17.
10. Rotate inner race to align lands with cage windows, then remove race from bearing cage through wider end of cage, Fig. 18.
11. Reverse procedure to assemble. Fill CV joint outer race with 3.2 ounces of grease and spread 1.4 ounces in CV boot. Use Ford Constant Velocity Joint Grease (High Temperature) E43Z-19590-A or equivalent.

Tripot CV Joint, RH Side, Escort

1. Remove large clamp, then slide boot back and wipe off excess grease. Inspect CV joint grease for contamination by rubbing a small amount between two fingers. Any gritty feeling indicates contamination. If grease is contaminated, proceed with disassembly. If grease is not contaminated and joint was operating satisfactorily, add grease and replace boot.
2. Using suitable pliers, bend retaining tabs back and separate outer race from tripot assembly.

3. Using suitable snap ring pliers, slide snap ring back on shaft, Fig. 19.
4. Push tripot assembly back on shaft, to gain access to circlip, then remove circlip from shaft.
5. Remove tripot assembly from shaft, and boot if necessary.
6. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Fill CV joint outer race with 3.5 ounces of grease and CV boot with 2.1 ounces of grease. Use Ford Constant Velocity Joint Grease/High Temperature E43Z-19590-A or equivalent.
