Fixed Column

Removal

1. Remove steering column assembly.
2. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws, then the switch.
3. Remove upper shaft bearing as described previously.
4. Remove bolts securing lock cylinder housing to outer tube flange bracket, then rotate ignition switch to start position and pull actuator interlock out of clearance hole in tube. Lift casting off upper steering shaft.
5. Remove ignition lock drive gear.

Installation

1. Install ignition lock drive gear and actuator.
2. Using a suitable punch, upset the serrated portion of the upper shaft sufficiently to assure an interference fit between the bearing inner race and the steering column upper shaft. Place lock cylinder housing on steering column flange bracket with upper steering shaft protruding through upper bearing. Turn ignition switch to start position to locate actuator interlock through the clearance hole in outer tube. Install lock cylinder housing bolts and torque to 12-21 ft. lbs.
3. Install upper shaft bearing and sleeve over end of steering shaft.
4. Place a piece of pipe (3/4 inch inside dia. x 1-1/2 inch long) over end of steering column upper shaft, then install steering wheel nut. Tighten steering wheel nut until steering shaft is drawn up into bearing enough to allow installation of snap ring in groove on shaft. Remove nut and pipe.
5. Install snap ring, turn signal switch and steering column.
