STALLS - 2.3L HSC - AFTER START AND LONG CRANKS - COLD ENGINE

FORD: 1988-90 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-90 TOPAZ

ISSUE: The engine may stall or quit after start up and long cranks. This may occur because of ...

^ Fuel pump vapor purge valve leakage

^ Throttle body sludge

^ Injector deposits

^ Idle air by-pass valve malfunction

^ Fuel volatility

ACTION: If the subject concerns are not corrected through normal engine/emissions diagnostic routines, refer to the following service procedure.

FUEL PUMP VAPOR PURGE VALVE LEAKAGE

1. Check the fuel pressure during starting.

2. If the pressure drops below 35 PSI and the vehicle stalls or has long crank time, replace the fuel pump.

3. If the fuel pressure is maintained above 35 PSI, the fuel pump operation is normal. Proceed to the next procedure.

THROTTLE BODY SLUDGE

1. Check the idle air flow per the adjustment procedure in the 1988-91 Engine/Emission Diagnosis Manual.

2. If the air flow is low, clean the throttle body per the throttle body/idle air by-pass valve cleaning procedure and adjust to specification.

3. If the vehicle still exhibits the concern, go to the next procedure.

INJECTOR DEPOSITS

1. Install Rotunda Injector Tester/Cleaner. Check flow on all injectors.

2. If injectors test OK, proceed to the next procedure.

3. If an injector is suspect, clean it until it is in specification or, if necessary, replace it.

4. Repeat cold starts after an overnight soak.

5. If concern still exists, go to the next procedure.

IDLE AIR BY-PASS VALVE

1. Replace the air by-pass valve. Refer to the Parts Block for correct parts usage.

2. If the condition still exists, proceed to the next procedure.

FUEL VOLATILITY

If the fuel used in the vehicle is premium high octane or suspected of being a low volatility fuel, advise the customer to replace it with regular unleaded fuel at next refueling.
