Article No. 90-3-6

FORD: 1989-90 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989-90 TOPAZ

ISSUE: The temperature control lever may not hold its set position and may require excessive effort to move when the blower motor fan control switch is set for high speed operation. This occurs because the temperature door does not have an assist spring.

ACTION: Install a temperature door assist spring. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Reach up behind the instrument panel. Locate the temperature control cable where it attaches to the temperature blend door control arm.

2. Slide the cable spring clip and cable as an assembly off the end of the door control arm.

Figure 1:

3. Install the temperature door assist spring (F03Z-19760-A) as shown in Figure 1.

4. After the assist spring is properly seated, slide the spring clip - with cable attached, onto the door control arm.

5. Adjust the cable, as required. Make sure that the door travels the full distance between maximum heat and maximum cool. Refer to the appropriate model year Tempo/Topaz Shop Manual, Section 36-47 for adjustment procedure.
