Camshaft: Service and Repair

Cylinder Head Assembly & Components:





The following procedure can only be performed with the engine removed from the vehicle. Remove engine as described under ENGINE.
1. Remove dipstick. Drain coolant and oil from engine.
2. Remove accessory drive belts and pulleys.
3. Position No. 1 piston at TDC with distributor rotor at No. 1 firing position, then remove distributor.
4. Remove cylinder head as described under CYLINDER HEAD.
5. Using a suitable magnet, remove hydraulic tappets and position in order so that they can be installed in their original locations. If tappets are stuck in their bores, use hydraulic lifter remover tool No. D81L-6500A or equivalent to remove tappets.
6. Loosen then remove fan drive belt, fan and crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove front cover as described under FRONT COVER.
8. Remove fuel pump, gasket and fuel pump pushrod.
9. Remove timing chain, sprockets and timing chain tensioner as described under FRONT COVER.
10. Remove camshaft thrust plate. Carefully remove camshaft from engine to avoid damaging camshaft bearings, journals and lobes.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Lubricate camshaft with suitable oil before installing. Ensure No. 1 piston is at TDC with distributor rotor at No. 1 firing position.
