SAFETY RECALL 90S15 TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS


Remove air bag module from steering wheel. Completely fill out the fax inquiry form (Attachment II) and fax the form to NAAO Export Sales, Wixom. Fax telephone number is shown on form.

The module serial number is on the label with the Ford oval, below the Ford part number. The label is on the back side of the module. (See Figure 1). If Wixom advises that the serial number indicates a suspect module, provide a rental car to the customer until a replacement module is received and installed. If serial number does not indicate a suspect module, re-install original module and release car.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE


WARNING: ALWAYS DISCONNECT BATTERY AND BACKUP POWER SUPPLY BEFORE WORKING ON AIR BAG SYSTEM.
1. DISCONNECT BATTERY GROUND CABLE.

2. DISCONNECT BACKUP POWER SUPPLY. Backup power supply is contained in Blue Box located:
Behind glove box (Continental, Taurus/Sable); Behind steering column/knee bolster (Tempo/Topaz); Behind Instrument Panel/EEC Module bracket (Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis).

3. Remove 4 nuts holding air bag module to steering wheel. Disconnect electrical plug.

4. Prepare and fax the inquiry form to NAAO Export Sales, Wixom.
5. If Wixom responds that the serial number is not on suspect list, reinstall module.

6. If serial number is suspect, Wixom will arrange for a replacement module to be sent to your location. If requested, arrange rental car for owner's use until module replacement service is completed. Reasonable rental car fee should not exceed $30.00 per day.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Place module in steering wheel. Connect plug.

2. Torque 4 nut/washers to 35-53 in.lb. (4-6 N-m).

3. Connect backup power supply.

4. Connect battery ground cable.
5. Verify air bag indicator lamp is working. Turn ignition to RUN. If the light flashes, count the flashes only after the code (series of flashes) has cycled twice. If the air bag lamp comes on for 4 to 8 seconds and then goes out, the system is functioning properly. If a fault is found, see Shop Manual Section 41-58.

6. Release car and submit claim form 1864.
REMOVED AIR BAG MODULE

Do not dispose of the removed air bag module. INSERT MODULE IN THE SAME BOX IN WHICH YOU RECEIVED THE NEW REPLACEMENT MODULE.

Hold the box for further disposition instructions. Each removed module must be returned to the manufacturer. Shipping instructions will be furnished from NAAO Export Sales, Wixom.
