Ignition Ballast Resistor: Description and Operation

The ballast resistor, wire type, maintains a specific resistance between the positive battery terminal of the ignition coil connector and the wiring harness connector. It is not in operation during engine cranking enabling the coil to receive a hotter signal for starting. Once the engine is running, the resistor is used to protect the coil from voltage overload.
