Instrument Cluster - Replacement

Standard Cluster

1. On models equipped with airbag, disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. On 1989-91 models, disconnect speedometer cable.
3. On all models, remove instrument cluster trim cover attaching screws and the trim cover.
4. Remove lower steering column cover attaching screws and the cover.
5. On Grand Marquis models, remove knee bolster.
6. On all models, remove steering column shroud lower half.
7. Remove screws securing transmission indicator column bracket to steering column. Detach cable loop from pin on shift lever and remove bracket from column.
8. Remove four instrument cluster attaching screws.
9. Disconnect cluster feed plug and remove cluster assembly from vehicle.
10. Reverse procedure to install.

Electronic Cluster

1. On models equipped with airbag, set parking brake and disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Unsnap center molding on left and right sides of instrument panel.
3. Remove steering column cover and column shroud.
4. Remove knobs from auto dim and auto lamp switches, if equipped.
5. Remove 13 screws retaining instrument panel and pull panel out.
6. Move shift lever to 1 position for access.
7. Disconnect electrical connectors from warning lamp module, switch module and center panel switches, if equipped.
8. Remove instrument panel carefully, using caution to not scratch cluster lens.
9. Disconnect electrical connector from front of cluster.
10. Disconnect PRNDL assembly from cluster by carefully bending bottom tab down and pulling PRNDL assembly forward.
11. Pull cluster out and disconnect electrical connectors on rear of cluster.
12. Remove instrument cluster.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Following installation, on models equipped with airbag activate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
