Intake Manifold: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove air cleaner, crankcase ventilation hose and intake duct assembly.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable and speed control linkage, if equipped, from carburetor.
4. Disconnect TV rod on AOD transmissions. Remove accelerator cable bracket.
5. Disconnect vacuum lines at intake manifold, then disconnect high tension lead and primary wiring connector from ignition coil.
6. Disconnect spark plug wires. Remove wires and bracket assembly from rocker arm cover attaching stud.
7. Remove distributor cap, adapter and spark plug wire assembly.
8. Relieve fuel system pressure and remove carburetor fuel intake line.
9. Disconnect distributor vacuum hoses from distributor. Disconnect distributor wiring connector and remove distributor hold-down bolt and remove distributor.
10. Disconnect upper radiator hose from coolant outlet housing and water temperature sending unit wire at sending unit.
11. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold, then remove bypass hose from water pump.
12. Disconnect crankcase vent hose assembly at rocker arm cover. Disconnect fuel evaporative purge tube.
13. Remove intake manifold and carburetor as an assembly.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply a 1/16inch bead of sealer to outer end of each intake manifold seal for full width of seal (four places).
b. Torque manifold bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 4, to 23-25 ft. lbs.
c. Following installation, fill and bleed cooling system.
d. Operate engine at fast idle. When engine temperature has stabilized, adjust engine fast idle speed, then retighten intake manifold bolts.
