Parking Brake Control: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Fully release parking brake.

3. Raise vehicle partially on hoist.





NOTE: A metal tool can be fabricated as shown, and will facilitate the removal and installation of the control assembly.





4. With the aid of an assistant, pull down on the parking brake cable, so that the fabricated metal tool can be positioned between the take up reel spring stud and the mounting bracket. This will aid in disconnecting from the reel.

WARNING: KEEP FINGERS AWAY FROM REEL MECHANISM WHILE TOOL IS IN PLACE.





5. Separate parking brake control cable from rear cables at the connector.
6. Lower vehicle.





7. Partially remove scuff plate and partially remove door weatherstrip.
8. Remove instrument panel center moldings (RH and LH) to gain access to lower steering column cover.
9. Remove lower steering column cover retaining bolts and remove cover.
10. Remove steering column-to-parking brake control shake brace.
11. Remove EEC-IV microprocessor.
12. Remove parking brake vacuum motor.
13. Remove LH cowl side trim panel.
14. Remove fuse panel retaining nuts and position aside to gain working room.
15. Remove LH lower instrument panel retaining bolts.

NOTE: It will be necessary to pull and retain the instrument panel rearward slightly by installing a small block of wood or similar tool between the instrument panel and the body.

16. Remove parking brake control retaining bolts.





17. Lower parking brake control, and disconnect the cable from parking brake control reel.

Installation





1. If a new parking brake control assembly is to be installed proceed to Step 2. When installing the same control assembly, fabricate a metal tool as shown, and place it between the parking brake take up spring tang and mounting bracket, making sure the pedal is fully released. This will aid in connecting the parking brake cable to the reel on the parking brake control.

WARNING: KEEP FINGERS AWAY FROM REEL MECHANISM WHILE TOOL IS IN PLACE.





2. Position parking brake control and connect control cable.





3. Install parking brake control-to-body side cowl and install three retaining bolts. remove shipping block or clip from parking brake control with pliers.





4. Remove wood block from instrument panel and install lower instrument panel retaining bolts.
5. Install EEC-IV microprocessor.
6. Install steering column-to-parking brake control shake brace.
7. Install brake control vacuum motor.
8. Install fuse panel.
9. Install LH cowl side trim panel.





10. Install lower steering column cover and install instrument panel center moldings.
11. Position door weather strip and push into place.





12. Position scuff plate and install retaining screws.





13. Raise vehicle and connect parking brake cable.
14. Lower vehicle and connect battery negative cable.
15. Check operation of parking brake control as outlined.
