Subject:
Safety Recall 90S03 Certain 1990 Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar Cars (Except Super Coupe and XR-7) - Starter Cable Replacement

Affected Vehicles
A total of 70 1990 Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar cars with base 3.8 Liter EFI engines and built on January 17, 1990.

Reasons For Recall
Some of these cars may have been produced with starter cables that are too long and incorrectly routed. Incorrect routing may cause the cable to contact the engine damper pulley. Should this occur, wear through of the protective cover and insulation could cause an electrical short to ground and result in overheating of the cable insulation and possibly an underhood fire. The potential for fire exists both during vehicle use and when the vehicle is parked with the ignition key removed.

To correct this condition, the starter cable assembly is to be replaced and properly routed on each of the affected cars.
