Child Restraint: Service and Repair

INSTALLATION
According to collision statistics, properly restrained children are safer in the rear seat than in the front seat.

WARNING: IF INSTALLING A CHILD SEAT OR INFANT CARRIER IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT; THE SUPPLEMENTAL CHILD SEAT BUCKLE MUST BE USED TO HOLD THE CHILD SEAT OR INFANT CARRIER IN PLACE. DO NOT USE THE FRONT PASSENGER LAP BELT BUCKLE AS IT IS ANCHORED TOO FAR FORWARD TO PROPERLY RESTRAIN SOME TYPES OF CHILD SEATS AND INFANT CARRIERS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

If a child safety seat or infant carrier is installed in the front seat, use the following procedure.

1. Obtain a supplemental child seat buckle at no charge from an authorized dealer.
2. Disconnect the shoulder belt from the emergency release buckle by pressing the red button on the buckle. Then allow the belt to retract.

NOTE: The safety belt warning indicator lamp in the instrument cluster will remain lit while the shoulder belt is disconnected.

NOTE: Be sure to reconnect the shoulder belt after the child seat or infant carrier is removed.

3. Install the child seat buckle on the inboard side of the passenger seat (adjacent to the console) by engaging the hooked portion of the buckle into the attaching eyelet. Then, pull upward until you hear a snap and feel the spring clip engage.

WARNING: DO NOT USE THE SUPPLEMENTAL CHILD SEAT BUCKLE FOR ANY PURPOSE OTHER THAN RESTRAINING A CHILD SEAT OR INFANT CARRIER.

4. Position the child seat or infant carrier in the vehicle on the front passenger seat.

5. Following the child seat or infant carrier manufacturer's instructions, route the lap belt through the child seat or infant carrier and insert the lap belt tongue into the supplemental child seat buckle until you hear and feel the spring clip engage.

NOTE: The lap belt routing shown through the seat in the provided illustrations does not apply to all child seats.

6. Grasp the lap belt below the child seat label and pull upward until all of the stored belt has been extracted and a click is heard. At this time, the lap belt retractor is in the Automatic Locking Mode.

7. Allow the lap belt to retract. A clicking sound will be heard as the belt retracts. This indicates that the retractor is in the Automatic Locking Mode. Then pull downward on the belt to remove any slack in the belt.

8. Before placing the child in the child seat or infant carrier, forcibly tilt the seat from side to side, and also tug it forward to make sure the seat is securely held in place.
9. As a further check to be sure the retractor is in the automatic locking mode, try to pull more belt out of the retractor. If you cannot, the child seat is properly secured.
10. Check to make sure that the child seat or infant carrier is properly secured prior to each use. If the lap belt is not locked, repeat Steps 6 through 9.

WARNING: WHEN USING ANY INFANT OR CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS PROVIDED BY THE MANUFACTURER CONCERNING ITS INSTALLATION AND USE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW EACH OF THE RESTRAINT MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS COULD INCREASE THE CHANCE OR SEVERITY OF AN INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION OR SUDDEN STOP.

REMOVAL
1. To remove the child seat from the passenger seating position, press down on the red button located on the top of the child seat buckle and carefully guide the belt back into its retractor.
2. Remove child safety seat.
3. Connect the shoulder belt to the emergency release buckle at the front A-pillar.

NOTE: When the lap belt is fully retracted, the lap belt retractor will change from the automatic locking mode to the vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode. This allows for freedom of movement, locking on hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. The lap belt cannot be made to lock by jerking on the belt.
