Displaying and Reading Trouble Codes
NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures to retrieve trouble codes without the Star tester.1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
2. Lower right hand module panel located in the luggage compartment. (T-bird only)
3. Connect Star tester connectors to vehicle connectors located near electronic controller assembly.
4. Turn the power switch located on the right hand side of the Star tester to the ON position. A steady 00 will appear to signify that the Star tester is ready to start the self-test and receive service codes.
NOTE: If the message LO BAT appears in the upper left hand corner of the read out display and stays on, replace the Star tester's 9 volt battery before continuing with the self-test. If the message LO BAT will appear momentarily when the power switch is turned OFF.
5. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, push the self-test button in the center of the Star tester. A colon should appear in the left hand side of the read out display.
6. Push Self-test button again. This deactivates the self-test sequence. The colon should disappear.
7. If the Star tester passes steps 1 through 6, proceed with the on-board self-test portion of the diagnostic procedure. If any codes appear during the self-test, refer to the on-board self-test service code index.
