QUICK TEST: Continuous 5.0 Self-Test

SPECIAL NOTES:
^ There are two modes to continuous test; Key on Engine Off and Engine Running


^ It is necessary to clear the codes in memory before continuing with this test.

HOW TO CLEAR THE CONTINUOUS MEMORY CODES (MIL-EQUIPPED VEHICLES)

^ Disconnect the negative battery cable, and depress the brake pedal for 5-10 seconds.
^ Repeat Self-Test to verify service codes have been erased.


DETERMINING THE CONTINUOUS MEMORY CODES TO BE TESTED

^ The cause of some of the continuous memory codes may have been eliminated during either Key On Engine Off or Engine Running Self-Test repairs.

^ Address only those continuous memory codes for which a similar code has not been previously serviced.

^ Go to Part B of Continuous Self-Test.

SPECIAL NOTES:

^ The Continuous Monitor Modes allow the technician to ATTEMPT to recreate an intermittent fault.

^ The STAR tester will flash the fault code when a fault is recreated.

^ The needle of the VOM will sweep the fault code when a fault is recreated. (For vehicles built after 11/2/87, if no codes are indicated, Go to QUICK TEST STEP 6.0).

KEY ON ENGINE OFF

^ Hookup a STAR tester or VOM as shown in QUICK TEST STEP 2.0.

^ Turn the STAR tester on and latch the center button; ground STI if using a VOM.

^ Turn the ignition key to the ON position.

^ You are now in the Continuous Monitor Mode.

^ Tap, move, and wiggle the suspect sensor and/or harness. If a fault is detected, a service code will be stored in memory and will be indicated as explained above depending on the type of equipment being used.

^ SERVICE CODE(S) INDICATED: go to PART C of Continuous Self-Test

^ NO CODES INDICATED: proceed to Engine Running Continuous Self-Test.

ENGINE RUNNING

^ Hookup a Star Tester or VOM as shown in QUICK TEST STEP 2.0.

^ Start the engine, run until warm.

^ Activate Self-Test, wait two minutes, deactivate and reactivate Self-Test. DO NOT shut engine off.

^ You are now in the Engine Running Continuous Monitor Mode.

^ Tap, move and wiggle the suspect sensor and/or harness. If a fault is detected a service code will be stored in memory and will be indicated as explained above depending on the type of equipment being used.

^ Go to Part C of Continuous Self-Test.
