LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 TOPAZ
ISSUE: The governor hydraulic circuit filtration system has been improved by using a new design filter. The filter has also been relocated inside the ATX case to reduce the chance of dirt reaching the governor assembly. Late 1988 model year vehicles, and possibly some early built 1989 models, will have both the new and old filters installed because of production techniques.

FIGURE 6:

ACTION: If service is required, only the new design filter will have to be replaced. Refer to Figure 6 for the new filter location. The older filter, located in the case under the main control assembly, can be removed and thrown away.
Until the soft seal and overhaul kits are revised to include only the new filter, the use of the filter provided in the kit is okay. When filter replacement is required, it is necessary to make sure both filters have been removed.

NOTE: THE GOVERNOR ASSEMBLY MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW DESIGN FILTER. POSITION THE FILTER AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 6.
