PASSIVE RESTRAINT (MOTORIZED) - DRIVE BELT BINDING AND NOISY

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 TOPAZ
ISSUE: A binding or noisy passive restraint drive belt may be caused by twisted guide belt brackets. Over tightening of one or more of the guide bracket attaching screws, most likely the center one, distorts the guides.
ACTION: Inspect the position of the guide belt brackets to determine if the guides can be repositioned or if new guides are required. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Remove the necessary "B" pillar finish panels to access the passive restraint system drive belt guides. Refer to the appropriate model year Shop Manual, Section 45-03.

2. If one or more of the three drive belt guide brackets are twisted, loosen the attaching screw and reposition the guide bracket, Figure 1.
NOTE: GUIDES THAT CANNOT BE STRAIGHTENED BY REPOSITIONING MUST BE REPLACED.
3. Tighten the attaching screws to 5-8 ft.lbs. (7-11 N-m). Make sure the guide bracket does not twist while tightening the screws.
4. Reinstall the finish panels.
