RESTRAINT SYSTEM-PASSIVE-FRONT SEAT SHOULDER STRAP TRACK ASSEMBLY-VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 5/03/88
Article No. 89-23-1
FORD: 1988 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TOPAZ
ISSUE: Some late 1988 and all 1989 design passive restraint shoulder strap track assemblies must be modified in the "A" and "B" pillar areas in order to be used as service assemblies on units built before 5/03/88. This is necessary because of late 1988 model year production tooling changes to the "A" and "B" pillar limit switch mounting brackets on the track assemblies.

ACTION: Use the following procedure to service the passive restraint shoulder strap assemblies. Refer to the Master Car Parts Catalog to obtain the appropriate service replacement front seat shoulder strap track assembly part number.

7. Remove the screws holding the vertical guide to the body, Figure 6.
8. Remove the two (2) screws holding the drive belt track and drive belt to the motor/drive assembly.

9. Remove the drive track. Disengage the drive belt from the drive gear teeth, Figures 6 and 7.

10. Disengage the vertical guide from the drive track, Figure 6.

Figure 2:

11. Using the release tab, detach the vertical guide at the shoulder strap track rear mounting bracket ("B" pillar). See Figure 2.

12. Remove the two (2) screws holding the "B" pillar bracket to the pillar, Figure 2.

Figure 4:

13. Remove the screw holding the "A" pillar limit switch and bracket assembly to the pillar, Figure 4.

14. Remove the two (2) screws retaining the overhead track to the body, Figure 4.

15. Rotate the track inboard to remove the track "A" pillar limit switch bracket retaining tab from its locating slot in the A pillar, Figure 4.
16. Remove the limit switch. Throw away the old track assembly.

LIMIT SWITCH BRACKET REWORK

1. Before installing the service replacement track assembly to the body, rework the "B" pillar limit switch rear mounting bracket as follows:

Figure 8:

Figure 9:

a. Scribe the "B" pillar limit switch bracket as shown in Figure 8.

b. Rework the top attaching hole into a 13.5 mm x 21.5 mm (0.5 x 0.8 in.) slot as shown in Figures 8 and 9.
CAUTION: BE SURE TO KEEP ALL METAL PARTICLES AWAY FROM THE LIMIT SWITCH AREA AND THE REST OF THE TRACK ASSEMBLY DURING THIS OPERATION.

Figure 9:

c. Install the existing "B" pillar limit switch to the new track assembly. Be sure the rubber limit switch bumper is installed correctly.

d. Secure the switch wiring to the bracket assembly with a new adjustable bundling strap (95873-S). Be sure the lock of the strap is positioned as shown in Figure 9.

Figure 10:

2. Inspect the "A" pillar limit switch bracket for possible rework.

a. If the bracket has a long narrow locator tab as shown in Figure 10, remove it for rework.

b. If the bracket does not have a locator tab, leave it attached to the track assembly and proceed to Step 2d.

Figure 11:

c. Remove the bracket locator tab as shown in Figure 10. Install the reworked bracket to the track assembly, Figure 11.

Figure 12:

d. Install the "A" pillar limit switch to the bracket/track assembly. Make sure the rubber limit switch bumper is installed correctly and the switch plunger passes through the plunger opening in the bracket as shown in Figure 12.

SHOULDER STRAP TRACK INSTALLATION

1. Loosely install the track assembly to the body, Figure 4.

2. Tighten the two (2) "B" pillar rear support bracket attaching bolts to 17-24 lb.ft. (23-33 N-m).

3. Tighten the two (2) overhead track retaining screws, Figure 4.

4. Install the limit switch bracket to the "A" pillar as follows:

Figure 13:

a. Rest the limit switch bracket against the "A" pillar.

b. Locate a new attaching hole location about midway between the old locator slot in the "B" pillar sheet metal and the top of the slot in the bracket as shown in Figure 13.

c. Prick-punch the location.

d. Using a suitable drill stop, drill a 5/16" (4 mm) diameter hole into the sheet metal.

7. Insert the drive belt into the motor/drive track.

8. Connect the drive track to the vertical guide, Figures 6 and 7.

9. Engage the drive belt to the motor/drive teeth and install the drive belt track retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 1.8-3.0 lb.ft.(2.5-4.0 N-m). Engage the rear lower guide to the motor/drive track, Figure 7.

10. Install the front seat shoulder strap track to the track assembly as follows:

a. Return the shoulder strap track carrier to the "B" pillar position.

b. Grasp the strap anchor and pull the strap webbing out of the retractor in the console. Allow the webbing to lay flat on the seat with no twist.

c. Install the shoulder strap to the track assembly by locating the anti-rotation pin in the strap carrier and aligning it with the notch in the strap anchor.

Figure 1:

d. Install the Torx head attaching bolt and tighten it to 8-12 lb.ft. (11-16 N-m) as shown in Figure 1.
