Oil Pump: Description and Operation
The rotary gear-type pump, which develops the oil pressure, is installed and operates as follows:
- Oil pump is attached to the engine front cover.
- The pump driven gear is rotated by the distributor shaft through an oil pump intermediate shaft.
- A full flow oil bypass filter (oil filter) is externally mounted on the engine front cover.
- Normally all engine oil passes through the oil bypass filter element.
However, if the element should become restricted, a spring loaded bypass valve will open, allowing an uninterrupted flow of oil to the engine's moving parts.
