Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Fig. 9 Front Cover Removal & Installation:
Fig. 8 Timing Chain Alignment:
1. Remove idler pulley and bracket assembly, then the drive and accessory belts.
2. Remove water pump as described elsewhere in this section.
3. Remove crankshaft pulley and damper. Refer to FRONT OIL SEAL.
4. Remove lower radiator hose, then the oil pan to timing cover bolts.
5. Remove front cover to cylinder block attaching bolts, then remove front cover, Fig. 9.
6. Cover oil pan opening to prevent dirt entry, then rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC compression stroke and timing marks are aligned as shown, Fig. 10.
7. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolt and washer, then slide crankshaft sprocket, timing chain and camshaft sprocket from engine as an assembly.
8. Install replacement camshaft sprocket, timing chain and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly with timing marks aligned, Fig. 10.
9. Carefully cut, then remove exposed portion of oil pan gasket. Coat oil pan gasket surface with sealing compound B54-19554-A or equivalent. Cut and position necessary gaskets on oil pan gasket surface and apply sealing compound above, at the corners and on gasket surface.
10. Lubricate replacement seal lip with clean engine oil, then install seal with suitable seal installer. Install front cover, refer to Fig. 9, for torque specifications. Use suitable sealant on front cover bolt which extends through water jacket.
11. Lubricate inner hub surface of vibration damper with clean engine oil, then apply RTV sealant to keyway of inner hub surface of vibration damper.
12. Reverse steps 1 through 4 to complete installation.
