Removal and Installation

Fig. 7 Intake Manifold Bolt Tightening Sequence:





1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine cooling system into suitable container.
3. Remove throttle body, then disconnect fuel lines.
4. Remove fuel injector wiring harness.
5. On 1990-92 models, remove ignition coil and bracket and set aside.
6. On all models, remove rocker arm covers as described in ROCKER ARM COVER.
7. Disconnect upper radiator hose, then the heater hose from water outlet.
8. Mark distributor rotor and body with reference marks, then remove distributor assembly.
9. Remove intake manifold attaching bolts, then the intake manifold.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten intake manifold bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 7.
b. On 1989 models, torque bolts in three steps, first to 11 ft. lbs., then to 18 ft. lbs., then to 24 ft. lbs.
c. On 1990-91 models, torque bolts in two steps, first to 11 ft. lbs., then to 22 ft. lbs.
d. On 1992-94 models, torque bolts in two steps, first to 15-22 ft. lbs., then to 19-24 ft. lbs.
