Disassembly and Assembly

Refer to Fig. 15 for steering column component identification.
Removal
1. Remove steering wheel as previously described.
2. Remove screws retaining upper and lower steering column trim covers, then the covers.
3. Remove hood release bracket attaching screw.
4. Working from below the instrument panel, remove screws retaining sound deadening panel, then the panel.
5. Remove screws retaining cowl side trim panel, then carefully pull trim panel outward, disconnect courtesy lamp and place panel aside.
6. Remove screws retaining left lower instrument panel, then carefully lower panel, disconnect speaker wires and place panel aside.
7. Remove nuts and washers retaining steering tube mounting bracket.
8. Disconnect turn signal, headlight, wiper/washer, horn, ignition switch gang and ignition switch bullet electrical connectors.
9. Pull steering column tube outward and away from shaft. When tube/switch assembly is free from shaft remove upper bearing tolerance ring and turn signal cancelling cam.
10. Remove preload spring and lower bearing tolerance ring from steering shaft.
Disassembly
1. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove lower bearing.
2. Using a suitable wrench, remove steering column mounting bracket.
3. Remove turn signal switch and headlight/wiper switch retaining screws, then the switches.
4. Using a screwdriver, pry out horn contacts and upper bearing.
5. Remove ignition switch retaining screws, then the switch.
6. Using ignition key, turn ignition switch to position I.
7. Using a screwdriver, depress lock cylinder clip and pull lock cylinder out from housing.
Assembly
1. Using ignition key, turn ignition switch to position I, then install lock cylinder into housing and remove ignition key.
2. Using a suitable socket and hammer, install upper bearing with tolerance ring.
3. Install horn contacts, ignition switch, headlight/wiper switch assembly and turn signal switch.
4. Install steering column mounting bracket. Do not tighten pinch bolts.
5. Using a suitable socket and hammer, install lower bearing.
Installation
1. Install turn signal cancelling cam.
2. Install preload spring and bearing retainer.
3. Install mounting bracket and tube/switch assembly onto steering shaft and mounting bracket studs.
4. Connect turn signal, headlight, wiper/washer, horn, ignition switch gang and ignition switch bullet electrical connectors.
5. If steering column mounting bracket was not loosened or removed, install mounting bracket with retaining washers and nuts and torque retaining nuts to 13-16 ft. lbs.
6. If steering column mounting bracket was loosened or removed, proceed as follows:
a. Install steering column upper trim panel.
b. Press downward on steering column tube to allow a 3/16 inch gap between upper trim panel and instrument panel. Torque mounting bracket clamp bolt to 15-19 ft. lbs.
c. Remove upper trim panel.
7. Reconnect cowl side trim panel courtesy lamp, then install trim panel.
8. Reconnect left lower instrument panel speaker wires, then install instrument panel.
9. Install sound deadening panel.
10. Install hood release bracket.
11. Install steering column lower and upper trim covers.
12. Install steering wheel as described previously.
