Article No. 89-12-5

MERKUR: 1988-89 SCORPIO

ISSUE: Vibration or shake during light acceleration, immediately following a decel may be caused by an internal pressure leak at the front pump support seal. This condition is caused by slippage in the torque convertor while in the lock-up mode.

ACTION: Use the following service procedure to determine if a new front pump support seal is required.

1. Drive the vehicle at highway speed to warm up the transmission.

2. Decel slightly until you feel the torque convertor unlock.

3. Accelerate lightly until you feel the torque convertor lock-up.

NOTE: THE VIBRATION OR SHAKE SHOULD BE PRESENT AT THIS POINT. REPEAT STEPS 2 AND 3 IF IN DOUBT.

4. If the vibration or shake are present, proceed as follows:

a. Disconnect the electrical connection from the vacuum switch which is located on the left side frame rail below the coil. This switch controls the torque convertor lock-up function.

b. Road test the car.

c. If the vibration and shake are gone, proceed to Step 5. If the vibration and shake are still present, use normal diagnostics.

5. Install a new front pump support seal (E5TZ-7L323-A). Refer to the Scorpio Shop Manual, Section 17-08 for service details.
