Shift Linkage: Adjustments

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove retaining clip, then disconnect shift rod from selector lever, Fig. 5.
3. Rotate transmission shift lever as far as possible toward front of vehicle.
4. Rotate transmission shift lever three detent positions toward rear of vehicle.
5. Without moving selector or transmission levers, attempt to slide shift rod clevis in or out to obtain proper fit, Fig. 6.
6. If clevis slides into pin, linkage is properly adjusted.
7. If clevis does not slide into pin, loosen locknut and thread clevis in or out to obtain proper fit.
8. After adjustment, tighten clevis locknut. Ensure linkage adjustment has not affected proper operation of neutral safety switch. With service and parking brakes applied, try to start engine in each gear shift lever position. The engine must start only in N or P positions. If engine cranks in any other shift position, check linkage adjustment and neutral safety switch operation.
