REASONS FOR THIS PROGRAM
Some of the involved Scorpios may encounter engine rough idle and hesitations as a result of a throttle position sensor malfunction.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
Approximately 18,000 Merkur Scorpios are involved in this program. Included are 1988 and 1989-model Scorpios built at the Koln Assembly Plant from February 16, 1987 through April 26, 1989.

Please be advised that CARES/OASIS is active for this program.
PROGRAM PROVISIONS
Owners of affected Scorpios will be requested to return their cars for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of throttle position sensors. The no-charge service provided by this program has no vehicle time/mileage limitations.
SPECIAL CLAIM PREPARATION
All claims are to be submitted on Form 1864. See Claims Preparation Instruction area of Attachment I.

OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM 89E80 TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS. CIRCULATE THEM TO YOUR PARTS AND SERVICE PERSONNEL. QUESTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO YOUR SERVICE ZONE MANAGER.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

1) Locate the throttle position sensor at the front-center of the engine compartment on the forward side of the throttle body and partially below the air bypass valve solenoid.

2) Inspect the top of the sensor for the presence of a "yellow" dot.

^ If there is a "yellow" dot, the sensor is ok and the car can be returned to the owner.

^ If there is no "yellow" dot, continue with the following steps.

3) Remove the electrical snap connector.

4) Bend back the locking tabs on the two 3 mm retaining bolts.

5) Remove the two bolts and lock tab plate.

6) Withdraw the sensor from the throttle shaft.

7) Position the new sensor on the throttle shaft using finger pressure only and holding the sensor parallel to the throttle body as the shaft is inserted. Assure that the "O" ring seal is properly positioned on the face of the sensor.

8) Install the lock tab plate and the two retaining bolts. Torque the bolts to 16.8 to 26.4 in. lbs. -- DO NOT OVERTORQUE.

9) Bend up the lock tabs against the bolts.

10) Reconnect the electrical snap connector.
