LAMP - FOG - BRACKET REPAIR PROCEDURE


MERKUR: 1988-89 SCORPIO


ISSUE: Fog lamp brackets are now serviced separately and with the bumper. Previously, it was necessary to replace the front bumper assembly to replace the heat-staked fog lamp brackets. A fog lamp bracket replacement procedure has been developed for service use.

ACTION: If service is required, use a two-part adhesive from an "A-1 Structural Adhesive Kit" and the following procedure to replace the fog lamp brackets.


The "A-1 Structural Adhesive Kit - No. 100081" may be procured locally from an automotive paint supplier. If it is not readily available, contact the Fiber Glass - Evercoat Company, telephone: 1-800-729-7600.

1. Disconnect the wires to the fog lamps.

2. Remove the front bumper cover. Refer to the 1988/89 Scorpio Shop Manual, Section 47-15, for service details.

3. Remove the broken or damaged fog lamp bracket(s) from the bumper.

4. Clean the fog lamp bracket(s) and bumper to remove dirt and paint from the mating surfaces.

5. File or sand the bumper and fog lamp bracket mating surfaces to remove weld flash. Make sure the bracket fits flush to the bumper.

6. Wipe the bumper and bracket mating surfaces with isopropyl alcohol.


7. Make sure the bumper and bracket line up properly using locating nibs on the bumper.

8. Mix equal amounts of the two-part adhesive from the "A-1 Structural Adhesive Kit".

NOTE: THE MIXED ADHESIVE MUST BE USED WITHIN FIVE (5) MINUTES.

9. Apply the mixed adhesive to the bracket flange and install it on the bumper.

10. Lightly clamp the bracket to the bumper to keep the bracket in place.

11. Allow the adhesive to setup for one (1) hour before removing the clamp.

CAUTION: DO NOT REPOSITION THE BRACKET DURING THE SETUP TIME.

12. Install the bumper and fog lamps on the vehicle.
