Timing Cover: Service and Repair

1. Remove oil pan as described under OIL PAN.
2. Remove radiator as follows:
a. Drain cooling system, then disconnect upper and lower hoses from radiator.
b. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect and plug transmission oil cooler lines from radiator.
c. On all models, disconnect A/C cooling fan switch electrical connector.
d. Remove upper fan shroud attaching bolts and rivets and the shroud. Retain rivets and radiator insulators for use during installation.
e. Raise and support vehicle.
f. Remove lower mount attaching bolts, then depress tabs to disengage upper studs.
g. Lower radiator assembly from vehicle.
3. Unfasten A/C compressor and Thermactor air pump and bracket and position aside.
4. Remove power steering pump and bracket, then the alternator and drive belts.
5. Remove engine driven cooling fan. Viscous clutch nut has left hand threads which must be rotated clockwise for removal.
6. Remove water pump as described under WATER PUMP.
7. Remove heater and radiator hoses, then the crankshaft drive pulley.
8. Remove front cover attaching bolts and the front cover.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. With new gasket in place on front cover, position cover on engine and start all retaining screws two or three turns.
b. Install alignment tool No. T74P-6019-A or equivalent to crankshaft, then position cover over tool.
c. Ensure front cover-to-oil pan mating flange properly aligns with lower edge of cylinder block, then torque front cover attaching bolts to specifications.
d. Upon completion of installation, operate engine for a period, then re-torque front cover attaching bolts to specifications.
