Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Fig. 5 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove intake hoses from throttle body, then disconnect throttle linkage.
3. Remove distributor cap and wires as an assembly, then disconnect distributor electrical connector.
4. Mark position of distributor rotor and housing for assembly reference, then remove hold-down screw and clamp and the distributor assembly.
5. Remove upper radiator hose, then the valve cover and shaft. When removing rocker arm shaft, loosen bolts two turns at a time.
6. Release fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Connect fuel pressure gauge (part No. T80L-9974-B) with extension hose (part No. D85L-9974-B) to Schrader valve on fuel supply manifold.
b. Position drain hose in a container and depress drain valve.
7. Disconnect fuel line from fuel rail, then remove intake manifold as previously described.
8. Remove pushrods. Note installed positions for assembly reference.
9. Remove exhaust manifolds as previously described.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head. Discard head gaskets and attaching bolts.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Left hand and right hand gaskets are not interchangeable.
b. Guide cylinder heads onto cylinder block with fabricated alignment dowels positioned in block.
c. Tighten cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 5.
