Dashpot: Description and Operation
Throttle Positioners:
During deceleration a dashpot permits the throttle plates to slowly return to the idle position. This is done when the throttle exerts pressure on the dashpot plunger and air in the dashpot chamber leaks out slowly allowing the throttle plate to slowly return to idle. A spring returns the dashpot to the extended position.
To improve cold engine idle a vacuum kicker allows a larger throttle opening. This is done when vacuum actuates the kicker to slightly increase the throttle plate opening. Vacuum is eliminated when a specified engine temperature is reached to make the kicker inoperative. The kicker is also activated whenever the A/C compressor is operating.
